A man who threatened two police officers with a samarai sword in Witham has been jailed for two years.

46 year-old Richard Hearn was found guilty of possession of an offensive weapon and affray after an incident outside his house on Wharf Road.

On August 2, 2012, Hearn made threats to his father who was concerned about his mental health. He then went outside his house and made threats to two women, ordering them to get out of their cars. They refused and he went back into his house.

Then, two police officers arrived at the house and were also threatened by him. They tried to subdue him using CS spray and a baton but he resisted all attempts to arrest him.

Hearn then chased the two officers out of the house holding the sword, and chased them down the road. They were finally able to arrest him in Highfields Road.

Dc Steven Walker who investigated the case said: "There is no doubt that our officers acted bravely in the face of the threats by this man with a sword, and feared that he would attack them.

"Richard Hearn has been sent to a mental health hospital where it is hoped he can receive the help that he needs."
