The voice personality of Mario Lanza doesn’t jibe with the British starch of Edmund Purdom’s physical appearance, but not many will mind because the latter’s acting is good. Doing her own singing in a gracious, charming manner is Ann Blyth, who might not be everyone’s idea of a barmaid who could charm a prince, but she’s pert and pretty.
Richard Thorpe’s direction keeps things moving at a likeable pace, whether the people are engaging in song, amour or duel.
To the Sigmund Romberg tunes for which Dorothy Donnelly did the original lyrics and Paul Francis Webster the revised ones used here, have been added three new songs by Webster and Nicholas Bredszky. They are ‘Beloved,’ ‘I’ll Walk With God,’ that is given a standout staging, and ‘Summertime in Heidelberg.’
