It’s even colder when I step out of the Land Rover and the light has gone completely. My breath smokes in the air. We had a mild, wet autumn, even up here in the Highlands. Winter has pounced upon the land: scattering frost and snow, tightening the earth in its grip. Petrified dead leaves crack beneath my feet and the ridges of mud left by old tyre tracks have frozen solid.

A former beauty queen is getting candid about her journey to sobriety.  Cullen Johnson Hill, who was first runner-up in the Miss America 1995 pageant, gave an unfiltered look at "what addiction looks like" to inspire others to quit drinking. "I've just come from jail, serving my time that I owed from my second DUI, and this will be my journey," she said in a Nov. 29 TikTok video. "I'm so much better when I'm sober.

Theater vet Ellen Brandt dies

Multi-hyphenate appeared on TV, in films Broadway producer, theatre and opera critic and actress Ellen Brandt died September 19 in Los Angeles from a stroke. She was 86. An emigre from Hitler’s Nazi Germany, born Ellen Ruth Friedsam, she obtained a double degree in math and chemistry and was offered a position on the Manhattan Project, but turned it down to accept a contract from Revlon before becoming the spokesmodel for the Ed Sullivan show.
