In Titanic, Cal Hockley (Billy Zane) is pretty much the worst. Not only is he arrogant, but he is also cruel to his fiancée, Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet). While traveling on the RMS Titanic in 1912, Rose meets Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio). Midway through the movie, Rose plans to leave Cal for the kind and adventurous Jack when the ship docks.
Of course, as fans of Titanic know, this plan never comes to fruition due to Jack’s untimely death when the ship sinks. Still, Rose manages to form a life of her own by evading Cal after being rescued. While Cal in no way compares to Jack, a deleted scene from Titanic showed that he did seem to somewhat care for Rose.
Cal is a terrible fiancé in ‘Titanic’
At the start of the 1997 film, Rose is traveling on the RMS Titanic with Cal and her mother Ruth (Frances Fisher). It is revealed that Rose’s father died, leaving Rose and Ruth with little money.
To maintain their upper-class status, Ruth arranged for Rose to marry Cal even though he is several years older and Rose does not love him. Until the two marry, Rose and Ruth are getting by on their name recognition alone.
Throughout Titanic, Cal is shown to be controlling and arrogant. When he discovers that Rose developed a friendship with Jack and went to a party in third-class, he yells at Rose and flips over a table.
Later on, Rose decides to leave Cal for Jack. Cal has Jack framed for stealing a necklace called the Heart of the Ocean. When Rose chooses to remain on the sinking ship with Jack over leaving on a lifeboat, Cal chases the two with a gun and shoots at them.
Rose and Cal both survive the sinking
In order to secure a spot on a lifeboat, Cal poses as an abandoned child’s father. Meanwhile, Rose and Jack stay on the RMS Titanic until it sinks. The two find a wooden panel, but it is only big enough for one person.
Jack helps Rose climb onto the panel. Before they can be rescued, Jack freezes to death. Rose is eventually saved, and as she travels to New York with other survivors she spots Cal.
Rose hides from him on the RMS Carpathia as he casually strolls by her. While narrating the story, she reveals that she later found out Cal committed suicide in 1929 after the stock market crash.
A ‘Titanic’ deleted scene shows a different side of Cal
In Titanic, fans do not see Cal look that hard for Rose aboard the RMS Carpathia. However, a deleted scene shows more of what survivors went through after they were rescued.
In the extended scene, fans of Titanic can see Ruth looking for her daughter. Cal makes his way from the first-class survivors to the deck with those from second and third class. He then sees a woman with red hair and runs up to her.
His voice filled with relief, he exclaims “Rose!” before realizing the woman is not Rose. While it is a small moment, it does humanize Cal to an extent and shows that while still an antagonist, he did care for Rose.
